YAG Laser Capsulotomy
(Treatment for “After Cataract”)
What is “After Cataract”?
After cataract surgery, the artificial lens implanted in the eye usually remains clear for life. However, in some people, the thin membrane (capsule) that holds the lens in place becomes cloudy over time. This is known as posterior capsule opacification (PCO), often referred to as “after cataract”.
PCO is not a return of the cataract and can develop months or years after cataract surgery.
Symptoms of After Cataract
Symptoms are similar to those of cataracts and may include:
PCO is common and can affect one or both eyes.
What is YAG Laser Capsulotomy?
YAG laser capsulotomy is a quick, painless laser procedure used to treat after cataract. A special laser is used to create a small opening in the cloudy capsule behind the artificial lens, allowing light to pass through clearly again.
The procedure does not involve cutting the eye and does not require an operating theatre.
How is the Procedure Performed?
What Will I Feel?
The procedure is usually painless
You may hear clicking sounds from the laser
Some people notice brief flashes of light
Anaesthetic eye drops are used to keep you comfortable.
After the Procedure
Vision may be slightly blurred for a few hours due to dilating drops
Most people notice clearer vision within hours or days
You can usually return to normal activities the same day
Driving is not recommended until your vision has returned to normal

These symptoms may indicate a retinal problem and require prompt assessment.
Follow-Up
Some patients do not require routine follow-up
Others may be reviewed depending on their eye condition
You will be advised if any eye drops are needed (often none)
Driving and YAG Capsulotomy
You must meet DVLA visual standards before driving. Do not drive on the day of the procedure if your vision is blurred from dilating drops.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is YAG capsulotomy permanent?
Yes. Once the capsule is opened, it does not usually become cloudy again.
Can the artificial lens be damaged?
The risk is very low when the procedure is performed by an experienced clinician.
Is this an operation?
No. It is a laser treatment performed in an outpatient clinic.
If you have any concerns before or after the procedure, your eye care team will be happy to advise you.
